The Fast-Track Route to Novel Resins Explained in New Book

Scientists at MIP Technologies (part of Biotage AB) have recently published a book chapter in the area of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). 

 

"With this contribution, we openly share our findings from over a decade of research and product development stemming from a commercial lab with the scientific community", says Dr. Ecevit Yilmaz at MIP Technologies.

"Our view is that the practical, hands-on experiences we have gathered in our company are valuable to not only our academic peers, but also to other commercial players in the field of selective polymeric adsorbents. Most of the work on MIPs that is published today comes from academic institutions. Our discoveries have emerged from commercial product development and industrial problem-solving projects. We believe that our findings are somewhat of an eye opener to the MIP community and also interesting to users of selective adsorbents."

Abstract

The cross-reactivity of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and its practical implications are discussed. Screening of MIP libraries is presented as a fast-track route to discovery of resins selective towards new targets, exploiting the fact that MIPs imprinted with one type of template molecule also show recognition to related and sometimes also to apparently unrelated molecules. Several examples from our own and others’ studies are presented that illustrate this cross-reactivity and the pattern of recognition is discussed for selected examples.
