On a crisp December day, I travelled up to Queens, New York to speak with Dr. Aaron Muth from St. John’s University about his work in cancer research with Biotage lab equipment and specifically the SNAP Bio cartridges. As an Assistant Professor of Medicinal Chemistry, Dr. Muth and the members of his research group use our equipment every day. We chatted about his research, students, and the needs related to tools and equipment.
I got to take a tour of the undergraduate lab at California State University, San Marcos with Dr. Robert Lafe. His lab is one of the first to have the new Biotage® Selekt Flash Purification System paired with the Sfär columns. We discussed how his undergraduate researchers were impacted by the broadened capabilities and their opportunity to learn about new instruments, and how it has affected his own research in his goals to gain tenure at the university.
On one of the top floors in the Baylor College of Medicine Neurological Research Institute, I visited the Center for Drug Discovery and learn from the Director and Medicinal Chemistry Leader, Dr. Justin Anglin, about muscle cachexia as well as their innovative projects focused on male contraceptives. We were able to take a tour of their state-of-the-art lab after which includes a full suite of Biotage products, something Dr. Anglin uses every day.
PeptiDream Inc. relocated their head office in August 2017 and established its new research center in the Kawasaki City International Strategic Center. The expanded facility is expected to spawn innovative new drugs. The base instrumentation is provided by Biotage. R&D Director Keichi Masuya and his staff elaborate on the development.
On Aug 30, 2017 a scientific literature search for the keywords Biotage AND peptide was performed by Biotage personnel. I met with Professor Sabra Botch-Jones in the Boston University Medical campus to talk about her career in forensic chemistry. During this interview, I learnt more about forensics than I’ve ever learned watching NCIS, and gained an insight into her fascinating career.
